Teacher Biography
A native of Hong Kong, Yee Wing Chan began her piano studies at the age of six. After moving to the United States, she studied with several notable performers and pedagogues, including Kerry Carlin, Keiko Sekino, Leonard Mastrogiacomo, and Kent Lyman. She completed a Graduate Certificate of Advanced Performance Studies and a Master of Music in Piano Pedagogy at East Carolina University. In addition, she received a Master of Music in Music Theory from Florida State University and a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance (summa cum laude) from Meredith College, where she was a recipient of the Theodore Presser Award for Excellence in Music.
As a performer Yee Wing has participated in the summer piano program at Brevard Music Center and performed at the Classical Music Festival in Eisenstadt, Austria. Dedicated to excellence in piano pedagogy research, she has presented at the MTNA National Conference, MTNA Collegiate Chapters Piano Pedagogy Symposium, and NCMTA State Conference. Her article "Ironic Processes of Mental Control: Implications for Musicians" has been published in Clavier Companion Digital Edition. Most recently, she has been awarded the Independent Music Teachers Scholarship by NCMTA to study the applications of sport psychology to music performance and teaching.
An active member of Music Teachers National Association and North Carolina Music Teachers Association, Yee Wing has served as the president of the MTNA collegiate chapter at ECU and the state chair of the NCMTA Piano Contest Festival (now called the NCMTA Piano Performance Festival.) She has also adjudicated piano festivals and contests throughout North Carolina. Presently, she maintains a private piano studio in Winterville, NC and teaches piano lessons to students of all ages and levels.
